01 _ Our Approach

Specify, Design, Validate

Our design process is built around three stages and close client collaboration at every step. All design projects are carried out under NDA. Design IP can be transferred to the customer.

Specify

We start by reviewing and refining the client specification, making sure the brief reflects the application, environment and standards the solution will need to meet.

Design

We produce conceptual 2D and 3D designs for client approval, then develop the chosen direction through to full 3D models and manufacturing drawings, with regular updates by call, video meeting or on-site visit.

Validate

Designs are validated against MSS manufacturing capability before drawings are released, removing the design-for-manufacture conflicts that typically surface late in the build cycle.

Our engineering team designs across the full MSS product range, from individual precision components through to complete assemblies and busbar systems

03 _ Assemblies

For DC switches, Isolators and Busbar Systems we work from MSS standardised designs, then adapt to project size, environment and architecture.

04 Tools and handover

Industry-standard CAD, fully managed file control

Our design team works in SolidWorks, Autodesk and Ansys, with a dedicated PDM system managing design files, revisions and approvals throughout each project.

 

Manufacturing drawings are issued formally to clients and to our manufacturing facilities through controlled file transfer, typically via Cloud based  shared workspaces or direct email release. The handover from design into manufacture is managed inside one team rather than across separate organisations, so production capability is built into the design from the start, not retrofitted afterwards.

Design at the edge of operating envelopes

High Power Busbar System

A busbar system designed for an existing tunnel network carrying peak currents up to 435kA, with low and known inductance requirements. The system was subsequently extended in later phases as the client expanded the installation.

Naval Shock Loading VCB

Additional parts designed and integrated to allow a standard vacuum circuit breaker to withstand 20g lateral and 70g vertical shock loads for a naval application, qualifying a commercial product for a defence environment without a clean-sheet redesign.

Does MSS design from scratch, or only improve existing designs?

Both. We design products from clean-sheet specifications, we improve and optimise existing client designs (often referred to as design-to-cost), and we manufacture to client-supplied drawings where the client retains the design.

How does design connect to manufacture?

Directly. Design and manufacturing operate as a single integrated team, so manufacturing drawings are validated against real production capability before release. Files are transferred through controlled OneDrive workspaces or direct email release.

What software does the design team use?

SolidWorks, Autodesk and Ansys, with a dedicated PDM system for managing design files and revisions across each project.

Where is the design team based?

At MSS's Technical Excellence Centre in Nottingham, supporting clients globally.

Who owns the design IP?

The customer typically takes ownership of the design once it has been validated and approved. All design work is carried out under NDA.
