Verify before you build, simulation and analysis for electrical engineering

Reduce risk, cut cost and accelerate certification by validating designs computationally before prototype or test. Our simulation team works from MSS's Technical Excellence Centre in Nottingham, UK, supporting both full design projects and standalone verification work for clients with existing products.

01 _ What We Simulate

Three core analysis disciplines

Our simulation work is built around three core disciplines, performed in-house against industry-standard platforms.

FEA (Finite Element Analysis)

Structural analysis of mechanical components and assemblies, validating designs against load, stress and deformation under real operating conditions.

CFD (Thermal)

Computational fluid dynamics for thermal management, modelling airflow, heat dissipation and cooling performance across components and enclosures.

Electromagnetic and electric field Analysis

Modelling of magnetic fields, current distribution and electromagnetic behaviour, supporting design of switchgear, busbar systems and high-current components. Modelling and analysis of electric fields for MV product.
03 When to use this service

Where simulation adds the most value

Meet the team

Simulation is most often used post-concept and pre-finalisation. Once general layout and specifications are agreed with the customer, simulation refines the design before drawings are released for prototyping. It can also be used earlier to size concepts at a coarser level, though for many components our team's design experience makes that unnecessary at concept stage.

The scenarios where simulation earns its place most clearly:

Pre-certification verification

Validating designs computationally before committing to expensive certification testing.

Design refinement

Iterating geometry, materials or layout to optimise performance before tooling or prototyping.

Cost reduction reviews

Identifying where material, weight or component count can be reduced without compromising performance.

Existing product analysis

Diagnosing performance issues on products already in service, or assessing them for upgrades.

03 Tools and Reporting

Industry-standard platforms, structured outputs

We work in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Ansys Maxwell and Simscale, with each tool selected for the analysis type it handles best.

Simulation outputs are issued to clients as structured reports, typically in presentation format, covering inputs, methodology, results and recommendations. Where simulation is part of a wider design project, results feed directly into the next design iteration. Where it's run as a standalone service, outputs are designed to give the client's own engineering team everything needed to act on the findings.

Simulation supports certification by reducing the risk of failure during physical testing, but it isn't a substitute for it. Products are tested against their relevant standards in physical certification.

04 Standalone Service

Independent verification for clients with existing designs

Simulation is available as a standalone service, separate from a full design engagement. It's a useful option for clients who have their own design teams but want a second opinion on a critical product, or who need analysis against a specific operating scenario their internal tools don't cover.

Standalone projects need a few inputs from the client to get going:

  • 3D models or 2D drawings of the product to be analysed
  • Operating data including current, voltage, temperature and airflow as relevant to the analysis
  •  clear definition of the question the simulation is being asked to answer

Project scope and timescales vary considerably depending on model complexity, input data and the level of analysis required. We scope each engagement individually rather than working from a fixed package.

01 / Frequently asked questions

At what stage of design is simulation typically used?

Most often post-concept and pre-finalisation, once layout and specifications are agreed. Occasionally earlier for rough concept sizing, though our team's experience means many components don't need simulation at concept stage.

Does simulation replace physical testing for certification?

No. Simulation reduces the risk of failure during physical testing and supports faster, more confident certification, but products are tested against their relevant standards in physical certification.

Is simulation available without a full design engagement?

Yes. Simulation can be commissioned as a standalone service for clients with their own design teams. We need 3D models or 2D drawings, operating data, and a clear definition of the analysis required.

What types of simulation does the team perform?

Three core disciplines: finite element analysis (FEA) for structural work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for thermal analysis, and electromagnetic and electric field analysis. All performed in-house at our Technical Excellence Centre in Nottingham, UK.

Which software does the team use?

We use SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Ansys Maxwell and Simscale according to the analysis that needs to be performed.
