01_ _ What We Test

A purpose-built electrical test facility

Our test facility is equipped for the high-voltage and high-current testing typical of switchgear, busbar and electrical assembly development.

Power Frequency Testing

AC dielectric testing up to 100kV, verifying insulation performance under operating-frequency conditions.

DC Dielectric Testing

DC testing up to 20kV, used for insulation verification and dielectric strength assessment.

Temperature Rise Testing

Continuous current testing up to 10kA DC, validating thermal performance under sustained load.

Millivolt Drop Testing

Resistance and contact-quality testing at currents up to 1200A, used for connector and joint verification.

Impulse Testing

Lightning impulse voltage testing up to 20kVp, simulating transient overvoltage conditions on insulation systems.

Material and Mechanical Testing

Material composition analysis and 5kN pull/compression testing, supporting both incoming material verification and assembly qualification.
02_ How we use the facility

Three roles in the engineering lifecycle

Meet the team

Our test facility supports clients in three distinct ways, each well-suited to the design and manufacturing work that surrounds it.

It is purpose-built for fast, expert-led testing at the design and manufacture stages. Where formal certification is required, this is carried out at an accredited test laboratory, with our engineering team supporting clients through the process.

Design confirmation

Validating that a new design meets its performance specification before drawings are released for production. The test team works directly alongside our designers, so findings feed straight back into the next iteration.

Reports of performance

Issuing formal performance reports that document test conditions, measurements and results. These support customer and internal engineering decisions, and provide a verified evidence base ahead of formal certification at an accredited laboratory.

End-of-line testing

Routine testing of production units before despatch, with mechanical, electrical and functional checks confirming each unit performs to specification.

03_ Certification testing support

Through the test house, with you

Our experience extends well beyond our own facility. We regularly support clients through formal certification testing at accredited laboratories, often taking projects from clean-sheet design through to fully certified product.

That support typically includes:

  • Test specification and planning: Translating product specifications into test plans against the relevant IEC standards.
  • Test house liaison: Coordinating directly with accredited laboratories on scheduling, sample preparation and test methodology.
  • On-site attendance: Joining the client at the test laboratory to manage the test programme, respond to findings in real time, and coordinate any redesign work needed between rounds.
  • Documentation: Preparing and managing the technical documentation that accompanies the certification process.

The certificate itself is held by the client. Our role is to make sure the product gets there with the fewest test rounds and the lowest cost.

04_ Selected Projects

Test capability, applied

01 /02

Naval Shock Loading VCB

Additional parts designed and integrated to allow a standard vacuum circuit breaker to withstand 20g lateral and 70g vertical shock loads for a naval application, qualifying a commercial product for a defence environment without a clean-sheet redesign.

1950s Oil Circuit Breaker

A legacy oil circuit breaker brought back into service after the original manufacturer had ceased operations 40 years earlier. The unit was diagnosed using our in-house test equipment, replacement parts designed and manufactured, and a full end-of-line test programme run before return to service.

01 / Frequently asked questions

Can MSS supply prototype components for testing?

Yes. We routinely manufacture samples for in-house and customer testing as part of design and development engagements.

How does the test facility fit alongside formal certification?

Our facility is purpose-built for design confirmation, performance reporting and end-of-line testing. Formal certification is carried out at accredited laboratories, with our engineering team supporting clients through the process from test specification to on-site attendance.

What documentation is issued from a test programme?

Reports of performance covering test conditions, measurements, results and any recommendations. The format is tailored to the project.

What testing equipment is available in-house?

We are equipped with power frequency testing to 100kV AC, DC dielectric to 20kV, temperature rise to 10kA DC, millivolt drop to 1200A, lightning impulse to 20kVp, plus material composition and mechanical 5kN pull/compression testing.

Which standards does the engineering team work to most often?

IEC standards, supported by experience taking products from clean-sheet design through to certified product at accredited test houses.
